Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Philippine Journal of Basic Studies (PJBS)

The Philippine Journal of Basic Studies (PJBS) welcomes the submission of original scholarly works that contribute to the advancement of basic education and foundational studies. Authors are encouraged to carefully follow these guidelines to ensure efficient review and publication.


1. Scope of Acceptable Manuscripts

PJBS accepts manuscripts related to basic education and foundational studies, including but not limited to:

  • Curriculum development and instructional innovation

  • Teaching strategies and pedagogy

  • Educational technology integration

  • Assessment and evaluation practices

  • Teacher education and professional development

  • Educational leadership and management

  • Policy research in basic education

  • Inclusive and special education

  • Literacy, numeracy, and foundational learning

  • Socio-cultural and community aspects of schooling

Interdisciplinary studies relevant to primary and secondary education are also encouraged.


2. Types of Submissions

The journal accepts the following categories:

  • Original Research Articles — Empirical or theoretical studies

  • Review Articles — Critical syntheses of existing literature

  • Case Studies — In-depth analyses of programs, schools, or practices

  • Short Communications — Brief reports of significant findings

  • Scholarly Essays or Policy Papers

Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration by any other journal.


3. Manuscript Preparation

Language

Manuscripts must be written in clear academic English.

Length

  • Research Articles: 4,000–8,000 words

  • Review Articles: 5,000–9,000 words

  • Short Communications: 2,000–3,500 words

Formatting Requirements

  • File format: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)

  • Font: Times New Roman, 12-point

  • Spacing: Double-spaced

  • Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides

  • Page numbers: Bottom center or bottom right


4. Structure of Manuscripts

Title Page (submitted separately)

  • Title of the manuscript

  • Full name(s) of author(s)

  • Institutional affiliation(s)

  • ORCID iD (if available)

  • Email address of corresponding author

Main Manuscript (without identifying information)

To ensure blind review, the manuscript file must not contain author names.

For research articles, use the IMRAD format:

  • Abstract (150–250 words)

  • Keywords (4–6 terms)

  • Introduction

  • Methodology

  • Results

  • Discussion

  • Conclusion and Recommendations

  • Acknowledgments (optional)

  • References

Headings and subheadings should be clearly organized.


5. Abstract and Keywords

The abstract should briefly state:

  • Background of the study

  • Purpose

  • Methodology

  • Key findings

  • Implications

Provide 4–6 keywords that represent the main topics of the study.


6. Tables, Figures, and Illustrations

  • Must be numbered consecutively

  • Include clear titles and captions

  • Indicate sources if reproduced or adapted

  • Submit high-resolution images (minimum 300 dpi)

  • Ensure figures are referenced in the text


7. Citation and Reference Style

PJBS follows the APA (7th Edition) style for citations and references.

  • All in-text citations must appear in the reference list

  • References must be complete and accurate

  • Use DOI numbers when available


8. Ethical Considerations

Authors must ensure that:

  • The work is original and free from plagiarism

  • Proper acknowledgment is given to all sources

  • Research involving human participants complies with ethical standards

  • Necessary permissions and approvals have been obtained

PJBS reserves the right to screen submissions using plagiarism-detection software.


9. Peer Review Process

All manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review by at least two independent reviewers. Authors may be requested to revise their manuscripts based on reviewers’ comments. The final decision rests with the Editorial Board.


10. Submission Procedure

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the journal’s official submission system or email (if applicable).

Authors must submit:

  1. Title page (with author details)

  2. Main manuscript (anonymous)

  3. Any supplementary materials (if applicable)

A confirmation of submission will be sent upon receipt.


11. Publication Fees

PJBS currently operates as a non-profit academic journal. Information regarding any article processing charges (if applicable) will be communicated to authors prior to publication.


12. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their work while granting PJBS the right of first publication. Published articles may be shared for non-commercial purposes with proper attribution.


13. Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could influence the research or interpretation of results.
