Educators' Faith-Integrated Practices and Academic Motivation among Senior High School Learners: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study
Abstract
Academic motivation is shaped not only by learners' personal goals but also by the instructional, relational, and spiritual conditions created by teachers. This qualitative phenomenological study explored how senior high school learners in a private Adventist school in Batangas, Philippines, perceived educator practices that shaped their academic motivation. Guided by Self-Determination Theory, the study focused on autonomy, competence, and relatedness while also examining the faith-integrated character of Adventist pedagogy. Three Grade 11 and Grade 12 learners who had experienced the school culture for at least three years were purposively selected for one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed, coded deductively using the three psychological needs and inductively for emergent faith-based meanings, and checked through participant validation, analytic memoing, and an audit trail. Five themes were generated: faith integration gave learning spiritual purpose; autonomy was strengthened through choice, leadership, and ownership; competence developed through clear explanations and formative feedback; relatedness emerged through caring, family-like teacher-student relationships; and the learning environment became motivating when spiritual, social, and academic support were experienced inclusively. Findings suggest that teacher practices motivate learners most strongly when they connect academic work to purpose, offer meaningful choice, make difficult tasks manageable, and sustain respectful relationships. The study contributes context-sensitive evidence for motivation-building practices in faith-based basic education and offers implications for teacher development in Adventist schools.
