Learning Effectiveness in Immersive Learning Environments: A Review of Extended Reality Readiness, Digital Pedagogical Literacy, Cognitive Load Optimization, and Experiential Learning Fidelity
Abstract
The rapid advancement of Extended Reality (XR) technologies has transformed digital education by creating immersive learning environments that enhance learner engagement, interaction, and experiential learning. Despite increasing adoption across higher education, the effectiveness of immersive learning remains inconsistent due to variations in technological readiness, pedagogical implementation, instructional design, and learner experience. This study aims to synthesize existing knowledge regarding the determinants of learning effectiveness in immersive learning environments by examining the roles of Extended Reality (XR) readiness, digital pedagogical literacy, cognitive load optimization, and experiential learning fidelity. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Relevant studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from internationally recognized databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, Taylor & Francis Online, and ERIC. The selected studies were analyzed using a thematic synthesis approach to identify recurring themes and develop an integrated conceptual understanding of immersive learning effectiveness. The review reveals that XR readiness provides the technological foundation for successful adoption, while digital pedagogical literacy enables educators to design meaningful technology-enhanced instruction. Furthermore, cognitive load optimization facilitates efficient knowledge construction by reducing unnecessary mental demands, whereas experiential learning fidelity strengthens learner engagement through authentic and context-rich educational experiences. The findings indicate that learning effectiveness emerges from the interaction of these four complementary dimensions rather than from technological sophistication alone. This review contributes to the literature by proposing an integrated conceptual perspective that explains how technological, pedagogical, cognitive, and experiential factors collectively shape learning effectiveness in immersive learning environments. The findings also provide practical guidance for higher education institutions seeking to implement immersive technologies to support sustainable digital transformation and improve educational quality
